Is ‘e-SIM’ Cards the next thing of future

SIM Card tray (e-SIM) purported -image1e-SIM is an embedded SIM card and is a new standard promoted by GSMA. It has been reported that Apple and Samsung are in talks with network providers to adopt these e-SIM (Electronic SIM) cards in future cell phones.

Initial impact will be seen on US and UK as most of the operators there like AT&T, Deutche Telekom, Etisalat, Hutchison Whampoa, Vodafone, Orange and Telefonica are expected to support the new standard of SIM.

The e-SIM will allow the customers to change the operator without hassle. The additional cost will be waived nor the users will require to swap SIM cards. Moreover, once standardized, users can even upgrade phones without the thought of Mini SIMs and Micro SIMs. This is possible as the information on Electronic SIM will be compliant and rewritable by all operators.

Apple has already developed its Apple SIM used in US iPads. Cupertino giant will continue to work on the feature and comply with GSMA Standards.

We wont see a near future e-SIM adoption as it requires specific hardware. The technical specification details are still in works.
